The Intersection of Research and Innovation

The purpose of this presentation is to describe research and innovation and examine the differences and commonalities between the two.

Research and innovation are usually thought of as being two distinct and separate processes; however, there are many similarities between them. In fact, research can lead to innovation and innovation often requires research. At the end of this presentation, the learner will be able to verbalize the components of the research and innovation processes and describe the ways they may intersect.

Equity entered Innovation Improves Post-Acute Care Quality for Individuals Insured by Medicaid

Chronically ill adults insured by Medicaid experience health inequities following hospitalization including more difficulties connecting to community-based providers, and higher rates of readmissions. To address these challenges, our multidisciplinary team, introduced an innovative clinical pathway called “THRIVE” developed to provide post-acute wrap-around support for individuals insured by Medicaid. Since its launch in 2019, individuals who participated in the THRIVE clinical pathway accessed more ambulatory care within 30 days of discharge and experienced fewer readmissions. The promising results of the THRIVE clinical pathway demonstrates that strategies to address the complex needs of individuals insured through Medicaid benefit from team-based, multi-sector partnerships.

Workplace racism effects on nurses' job-related outcomes, including their emotional wellbeing

COVID-19 emerged against the backdrop of increased global attention on experiences of racism inside and outside the workplace. The combined experiences of COVID-related worries, negative racial climates, and racial microaggression experiences in hospital workplaces represent a dual pandemic for nurses of color that harms their well-being and other job-related outcomes.
